THESSALONIKI PREFECTURE
The weather in Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is the second biggest city of Greece. It is built near the sea of Thermaikos gulf and the habitats are very friendly and hospitable. In this city, there are a lot of monuments of importance value, beautiful coasts, castles and Aristotelous square with a variety of cafes, restaurants and an intense day and night life.
Some of the most worth-to-see sites are:

Agios George’s cave in Kilkis Prefecture, one of the most important caves of Greece, due to the fact that it is medically indicated as suitable for the treatment of respiratory diseases. The cave of Kilkis has proved to be ideal and accumulated all the conditions as a cave-therapy center, with beneficial effects in cases of chronic respiratory diseases (asthma) and with particularly improved results to children, in reference to the treatment of skin diseases due to allergic infections and in general an overall rejuvenation of the human body. It is located about on a 1h distance by car, from Thessaloniki. Furthermore, close to this cave (on a distance of approximate 300m) there is a municipal snack bar, where on its 2nd floor, a very important Paleontology Exhibition is housed. This Exhibition presents findings from the Cave of Agios Georgios, and a lot of famous fossilized bones and teeth, dating back to the Ice Age. These bones belonged to animals that have now been disappeared from Europe, due to the climate change, such as animals were: The cave hyena, the giant weasel, the giant deer, the primitive ox, the wild horse.

Another marvelous cave is the Dragon’s cave in Kastoria Prefecture. It is located about 2h distance by car from Thessaloniki. The cave stretches over an accessible route of 300 meters where the visitor can marvel at an impressive number of stalactites and stalagmites. The temperature inside the cave remains stable throughout the year, ranging between 16 – 18 ⁰C, while the humidity goes up to 90%. In order to properly replenish the air inside, no more than 12 people, are allowed to be inside the cave, at the same time.
Thessaloniki is a city surrounded by mountains and the funs of hiking trails can enjoy the beauties of the nature scenery through walking paths. Chortiatis mountain, has also a lodge offering accommodation and food as well as organized hiking excursions.
HALKIDIKI PREFECTURE
The weather in Polygyros
Halkidiki is the garden of paradise, one of the best journeys! The visitors repeat their vacations every year to this magnificent place, because there are so many good reasons: Crystal light blue and turquoise waters, caves, sandy beaches, wild and cosmopolitan places of interest, intense night life all of these in combination with the amazing landscape of pine trees compose a dreamy destination.
The peninsula of Halkidiki consists of three smaller peninsulas: Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos Mountain (Holly Mountain due to its monasteries). Some of the most important places of interest are:

Petralona cave (in Moudania, Halkidiki). This cave is known for its famous skull of an ancient man, the Archanthropus (i.e. an archaic Homo sapiens).

Halkidiki, apart from the marvelous coast lines, has also the most, in number, campings than any other prefecture of Greece. Ιn Paliouri village (Kassandra area), an oil painter, transformed the whole environment of his birth place by decorating flower pots and putting them in miscellaneous parts of the village! He initially started his project by gathering wasted tins and cans. During last winter, he managed to collect about 100 useless tins and cans. He cleaned them and bought the painting colors at his own expense. Then he assigned to the children of the village, by his guidance, to paint the cans, which looked like small dolls with so pretty vivid colors! Ιnside the cans the children planted flowers of different species and colors! And the outcome of their efforts is presented in the following pictures! So if your journey leads you to Halkidiki, this summer, make a stop to Paliouri to admire this charming village!

KAVALA PREFECTURE
The weather in Kavala
Kavala is considered the Mecca of tobacoo, since thousands of tobacco workers, earned their living here during past times. Nowadays, Kavala is a modern coastal city, with its chic shops, cafes, bars, restaurants as well as a tobacco warehouses that have been transformed into a shopping center.
Some of the most important sites of Kavala are:

The Castle (or else the Acropolis) of Kavala, with its panoramic view to the trademark of the city.

Imaret, which was initially a religious, educational and charity center. The word Imaret in Arabic language comes from “imara” which means construction. From year 2001, this construction was given from the Egypt State to a civilian for a full reconstruction and transformation to a luxury hotel.
